Bereavement Support & Services

In Bristol we offer:

04_icon_Telephone Telephone Support (Tel: 0117 926 4045)

All referrals are managed initially on the phone. Trained volunteers will take information, talk to you about your bereavement and discuss what we can do to help you.  If you are particularly distressed we can arrange for ongoing telephone support though our partnership with The Samaritans.

Assessment Meeting

We offer a one-off 40 minute assessment session to discuss your needs in more detail. You may find that this is all the support you require and result in no further contact with us. If not, it will help us agree about what more we can do to support you.

01_icon_OneToOne One-to-One Support

We offer weekly one-to-one sessions for as long as you need. Each session lasts about an hour.

These sessions give you an opportunity to talk about anything that is related to bereavement.

Your Bereavement Support Volunteer is not there to offer advice nor to make judgements about you or anything you say.  He or she is there to listen and try to understand your feelings and situation.  You may wish to talk about how you feel now or about things that happened in the past.  People are sometimes surprised about what they start talking about and how things can start to make sense in a way they didn’t expect.  You can talk about how a bereavement has affected or is affecting you and share your concerns. Your bereavement volunteer can also help you to explore different options and help you to make decisions and act on them.

We aim to provide short term support where possible and have a starting point of six sessions.  However some people find that they require fewer or additional sessions.

Drop-In Sessions

We run informal Drop-In groups every other Thursday between 10am and midday, when refreshments are available, and there is an opportunity to meet other people who have been bereaved.

These are held in our Bristol office where trained volunteers are present to welcome and talk to anyone who comes. Although these are Drop In sessions we ask any interested to contact us by telephone or email before coming for the first time.  This helps to clarify whether the Drop In group is the right type of support for you and it helps us to plan for the number of people expected.

03_icon_Group Therapeutic Groups

We run therapeutic groups. These are weekly two-hour sessions spread over a period of 8 weeks and are usually for a particular type of bereavement or age group.  Please phone us to find out whether there is a group suitable for you running at the moment.

Bereaved by Suicide support group

This is a fortnightly Drop In group for anyone who has been bereaved by suicide.  It is run by two specially-trained counsellors. The group offers a safe and supportive setting for people to share experiences and feelings with others who have been bereaved in this way.  Please call the Bristol office to find out group times and dates and to let us know if you wish to come along.

02_icon_CYP Children and Young People’s Service

Bereavement Volunteers specially trained to work with children and young people provide one-to-one support for children and young people (under 18).  As with our adult one-to-one support this is short term bereavement support rather than longer-term psychotherapy.

Bereavement Walking Group

This service is for bereaved people who are struggling to find their way through grief or who may have found it more difficult to socialise since their loss.  It is another way for bereaved people to offer each other moral support as some people find it easier to talk while walking.  The 7 week courses of weekly 1.5 hours are led by a trained Cruse volunteer.

Home visits:

We offer home visits for people who are unable to get to or into our office or other venues used for the provision of bereavement support.

05_icon_EmailEmail Support

Some people prefer to receive support and information via email, and if so, we can provide this.

The services above are available to anyone living in Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset. However, bereaved people in South Gloucestershire can also attend the Drop-In that we provide in Kingswood. Bereaved people in North Somerset can also access support provided locally in their area.
